West Bloomfield Marching Band Program Seeks Donations for New Percussion Instruments

West Bloomfield, Michigan – July 20, 2016 When West Bloomfield residents hear the sound of drumbeats coming from the parking lot at WBHS during the summers, it can only mean one thing: Marching Band season is coming! In order to keep the music going, the percussion section of the award-winning West Bloomfield Marching Band and Winter Percussion group is asking for help from the community in raising money to purchase new drums and carriers, including snare, bass and tenor “quad” drums.

Chris Vilag, the director of the winter percussion program and assistant director for the West Bloomfield Marching Band, says the current equipment, which was purchased approximately 6 years ago and has been used for at least 12 consecutive marching seasons, is showing signs of substantial wear and tear, with some of the replacement parts no longer available. “We expect these kids to compete at a high level and I would like to provide them the equipment that a high level group would use.”

Indeed, the West Bloomfield marching ensembles truly compete at a high level, with the WBHS Marching Band consistently placing in the top 10 in state finals competition, while the West Bloomfield Winter Percussion group is perennially among the top 5 in the state.

Mr. Vilag hopes to purchase top-quality, gently used equipment from Motor City Percussion, a nearby independent percussion ensemble, at a considerable savings over the cost of the same equipment purchased brand new.

The percussion section, which consists of approximately 13 students in grades 7 through 12, has set an initial goal of raising $5,000 by the first day of school, and plans to raise the money through a can and bottle drive, a car wash and a fundraising page through the YouCaring.com website. The group hopes to achieve its final goal of $10,000 by the start of the winter percussion season. Members of the community who wish to make a contribution can do so by visiting https://www.youcaring.com/west-bloomfield-hs-605406 . This fundraiser is sponsored by the Band Boosters Association of West Bloomfield (BBAWB), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Donations may be tax deductible.
