Chad Mielens
Director of Bands, West Bloomfield High School

Mr. Chad Mielens currently serves as Director of Bands at West Bloomfield High School and Abbott Middle School. Mr. Mielens has been in this position since 2014. From 2011-2014, while still serving as Director of Bands at Abbott Middle School, Mr. Mielens was also the co-director of the West Bloomfield High School Bands. In his current position, Mr. Mielens works closely with all aspects of the district’s band program including the WB Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, as well as the concert ensembles at WBHS and AMS. Mr. Mielens also supervises the winter marching programs, including Winter Percussion, 3 Winter Guards, and the Winter Winds.

Mr. Mielens earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. While at EMU, he performed with the EMU Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Trombone Choir, and Marching Band. During his time in the EMU Marching Band, he served one year as trombone section leader and three years as drum major. Mr. Mielens is currently working towards his Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Florida in Gainesville, and has completed additional post-graduate work towards his teaching recertification from Baker College in Flint.

Mr. Mielens has performed professionally in a wide variety of different venues as a trombonist. Mr. Mielens has a strong background in jazz and classical music, having performed with several local jazz bands, community bands, and orchestras.

Mr. Mielens also serves on the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association District IV Executive Board. From 2013-15, he held the position of 1st Assistant Vice President for Band and Orchestra Festival. Since 2015, Mr. Mielens has held the position of Vice President for Band and Orchestra. In this position, Mr. Mielens coordinates band and orchestra festival for MSBOA District IV.

Mr. Mielens is professionally affiliated with Mu Phi Epsilon, a professional music service fraternity, and held the office of Vice President in the Epsilon Lambda Chapter. He is also affiliated with the Michigan Education Association, the National Association for Music Education and the Michigan Competing Bands Association.

Mr. Mielens joined the faculty of West Bloomfield in 2011 after spending time at Harrison High School in Farmington Hills where he completed his student teaching. You can reach Mr. Mielens at

Karl Stein
Director of Bands, Orchard Lake Middle School

Mr. Karl Stein is the Director of Bands at Orchard Lake Middle School.  Mr. Stein also teaches the 6th grade band at Abbott Middle School.  Mr. Stein is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. While at EMU, he performed with the EMU Wind Symphony, University Choir, Jazz Choir, Euphonium-Tuba Choir, and Marching Band. During his time in the EMU Marching Band, he served three years as drum major and one year as equipment manager.

Mr. Stein performed in DCI with the Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps of Lexington, Kentucky in 2004 on contrabass and in 2005 as drum major, earning the runner-up award for Drum Corps International’s Drum Major of the Year award for that year.  He also spent two years as a music instructor for the world championship finalist Glassmen Drum & Bugle Corps in 2007 and 2008.

Mr. Stein comes to West Bloomfield after spending three years as Band Director at Gladewater Middle School and Assistant Director at Gladewater High School in Gladewater, Texas.  While in Texas, his ensembles received excellent ratings at concert and sightreading contest, and his students have qualified for all-region band each year at the middle school, and all-area band at the high school.

Mr. Stein has held professional affiliations with Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band fraternity, the National Association of Military Marching Bands, the Texas Music Educators’ Association, the Texas Bandmasters’ Association, the Association of Texas Small School Bands, the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, and the Michigan Competing Band Association.  You can reach Mr. Stein at

Chris Vilag
Percussion Director, West Bloomfield High School Marching Band/Winter Percussion

Chris is the Percussion Director for the WBHS Marching Band and Winter Percussion Ensemble.  He began his marching career with Carlson High School Marching Band where he marched for four years, one year on bass and three on snare. After graduating, he marched for two years in the Eastern Michigan University Marching Band playing snare. He began his winter career marching snare drum with Motor City Percussion, and then moved on to play bass drum at Eastside Fury where he aged out in 2011 as the Ensemble Section Leader.

Currently, Chris is a performer with the Detroit Lions Drumline and teaches the West Bloomfield High School Middle School Percussion and Winter Percussion ensembles. In 2014 he helped West Bloomfield Percussion become Scholastic A State Champions. His other teaching experience includes Trenton High School, Carlson High School, Lake Effect Percussion, G-Force Winter Percussion, Ypsilanti Winter Percussion, and Ferndale Winter Drumline.
