Dear Marching Band Members and Families,

It is with great excitement we begin our annual band camp, in Ortonville this week! We have the entire opening movement and half of the second movement of the show on the field. By this time next week, we hope to have three movements on the field, plus the music for movement four ready to perform. You will not believe how much we can accomplish in a week!


If this is your child’s first time to band camp, you/they may be experiencing some anxiety. I can assure you that this will be a tremendous growing and learning experience for your son or daughter. They will bond with their fellow band members, improve musically and enjoy themselves with the many outside of rehearsal activities we have planned.


If your student is returning to band camp this year, they should be excited with how much farther along we are this year in terms of learning music and drill! We are well on our way to producing a very entertaining and high quality show for this fall.

Throughout the season, we like to highlight people who have been excellent beyond expectation, people who have really gone above and beyond for the benefit of the West Bloomfield Marching Band. This week, the band parents have been AWESOME! It’s impossible to pick only one. Super Lakers this week are Rita Satam, who has planned a memorable Senior Dinner for our band members in their final year and Mark Affer, who we called in a panic after learning there was no scaffolding available for us at Tamarack. He donated the use of pieces of scaffolding he owns, and went to the rental place to pick up the remaining pieces and parts needed, AND THEN drove up to camp today to set it up for us. And finally, we would be nowhere this week without Ruth Richards, who coordinated Tag Day (new locations, not easy) and all the last minute details for Band Camp. You make the Marching Band experience better for not just your own children but for all of them. Thank you all.

Tag Day 2015 was amazing! Beautiful weather, friendly customers, and enthusiastic band members. Our preliminary results show $2815 in donations. Well done, Lakers!

In the past, jump start volunteers have given band members flexibility to go through the process outside of their scheduled times. However, if these needs cannot be accommodated, students may go to their respective jump start times and join us when they can.

On September 12 (the Saturday after school starts), West Bloomfield hosts MCBA Field Day. Competing Bands from all over southeast Michigan will come to perform their shows before judges for comments, rather than scores. There are many volunteer slots that need to be filled, including admissions, program sales, concessions, parking lot control, judge transportation, and band guiding. Parents (and siblings who are earning Community Service hours) who can volunteer should email Ruth Richards.


BOA Nationals November 12-15

FYI, for BOA Nationals in Indianapolis we have reserved rooms for the band at the Comfort Inn South , 5040 S. East St, Indianapolis IN.


Now that the band is really active, a great way to stay on top of activities, dates, times and general goings–on is to join the Official West Bloomfield Marching Band facebook page. This page is not open to the public, but band members, staff, and parents are welcome to join. This is where photos of rehearsals and Band Camp activities are posted. For example, photos from “Wednesdays we wear Pink” day and Tag Day can be found there now.

During the Marching Band season, parents help with loading and unloading instruments and props from our semi-truck, and getting these essential pieces onto the field before a performance. Crew Chief Brett Crawford is looking for volunteers who are interested in helping or have questions about what it entails. Please email Brett at  Bonus: Pit crew members get free admission to the shows, and can view the performance from the track surrounding the field. You can’t get any close to the excitement without an instrument or flag!
