Dear Marching Band Members and Families,

I hope everyone has had a very relaxing post-camp weekend. While reflecting on this past week, I am filled with an immense amount of pride. Bravo to you all! I couldn’t be happier with where we are at right now, and I am ecstatic for what we will accomplish this fall. Enjoy the next two days off and make sure you get your rest, because it’s back to work on Wednesday.

With school starting so late this year we have two more weeks of full day rehearsals, but they will be short weeks. We have made arrangements for the designer of our show to attend two rehearsals, and the only dates available are next Thursday and Friday. Therefore, rehearsals next week will be on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and the following week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. When school starts on September 8, rehearsals switch to 3:30 – 6:30 Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Now we start preparing for football games, competitions, and our home Field Day on September 12. We are in an excellent position to excel this season. All we need to do is BE OUR BEST.

Go Lakers!

full calendar

Throughout the season, we like to highlight people who have been excellent beyond expectation, people who have really gone above and beyond for the benefit of the West Bloomfield Marching Band. This recognition is not only given to band members, but also to staff and Band Boosters. Nominations are welcome. When you catch someone doing something great, please email

During our week at band camp, so many people stepped up and did more than was asked; it’s impossible to narrow it down to one. Super Lakers this week are Drum Majors Hershal Satam and Aidan Brice, who kept the band on track both on and off the field; Camp Nurse Anne Marie Collier-Miller, who tended to all our medical needs; and all the parents who came up during the week to help out, giving students and chaperons some welcome backup.

Early Notice: We are planning a bottle drive to take advantage of Labor Day beverage consumption. Sections will work together: Color Guard vs. Percussion vs. Brass vs. Woodwinds. Flyers will be prepared for band members to distribute to neighbors, asking for returnable bottles to be donated to WBHS Marching Hand. Bottles will be retrieved the weekend after Labor Day and redeemed at retailers. The section turning in the most $$ will be declared the winner! More details to follow…

Wednesday August 26: Rehearsal 9am-4pm; Jump Start for 12th and 11th Grade
Thursday August 27: Rehearsal 9am-4pm; Jump Start for 12th and 11th Grade

Friday August 28: Rehearsal 9am – 4pm; Jump Start for Abbott and OLMS.

In the past, jump start volunteers have given band members flexibility to go through the process outside of their scheduled times. However, if these needs cannot be accommodated, students may go to their respective jump start times and join us when they can. Thursday and Friday rehearsals with our show designer are an opportunity you really should not miss if at all possible. Please do your best to attend as much of our rehearsal time as possible.

The Saturday after school starts, West Bloomfield hosts MCBA Field Day. Competing Bands from all over southeast Michigan will come to perform their shows before judges for comments, rather than scores. There are many volunteer slots that need to be filled, including admissions, program sales, concessions, parking lot control, judge transportation, and band guiding. Parents (and siblings who are earning Community Service hours) who can volunteer should email Ruth Richards.

Now that the band is really active, a great way to stay on top of activities, dates, times and general goings–on is to join the Official West Bloomfield Marching Band facebook page. This page is not open to the public, but band members, staff, and parents are welcome to join. This is where photos from Band Camp activities and our performance on Friday are already posted. .

Our show, “Venezia,” is quite prop-heavy with columns, canals and even a gondola! We are in need of parents to help with loading and unloading props and instruments and from our semi-truck, and getting these essential pieces onto the field before a performance. Crew Chief Brett Crawford is looking for volunteers who are interested in helping or have questions about what it entails. Please email Brett at  Bonus: Pit crew members get free admission to the shows, and can view the performance from the track surrounding the field. You can’t get any close to the excitement without an instrument or flag!

There is a great deal of helpful information provided in our handbook, things that will be helpful to know as the season is now underway. Uniform care, spectator etiquette – all covered in the handbook.   Click HERE to download the handbook.
