full calendar

Congratulations this week to the entire Marching Band for being so open to change and responding so enthusiastically to show writer Steve Alia’s additions of body movement. It’s a rare opportunity to work with the show writer, and we were fortunate enough to have two days with Mr. Alia this week. Well done, Lakers! Way to go with new material!

On Tuesday, Mrs. Karow will have bottle drive flyers for section leaders to distribute to their sections. Make plans to distribute flyers to neighbors and friends, asking for returnable bottles to be donated to WBHS Marching Hand. Sections will work together: Color Guard v. Percussion vs. Brass vs. Woodwinds. Bottles will be retrieved the weekend after Labor Day and redeemed at retailers. The section turning in the most $$ will be declared the winner!

Please attend the September Band Parents Meeting on September 1 at 7pm at WBHS. Items to be discussed include the Prism concert, Football Schedule, and Homecoming schedule. Other topics are pit crew, fundraising, and upcoming events. The agenda is attached to this email. Looking forward to seeing you there!

The Saturday after school starts, West Bloomfield hosts MCBA Field Day. Competing Bands from all over southeast Michigan will come to perform their shows before judges for comments, rather than scores. There are a few volunteer slots that still need to be filled, in admissions, program sales, concessions, parking lot control, judge transportation, and band guiding. MCBA will not allow students to guide bands, but there are a few jobs available for students to earn Community Service Hours. Parents or students who can volunteer should email Ruth Richards.

The Band Boosters will publish a program for Field Day. All band members and families are invited to sell ads in the program.  50% of the proceeds from ads sold are banked in the student’s Points account. Start approaching potential customers; ad order forms will be finalized shortly. Many parents take this opportunity to celebrate (and/or mildly embarrass) their band kids with photo ads.  Section Leaders receive a complimentary quarter page ad to honor their section.

Now that the band is really active, a great way to stay on top of activities, dates, times and general goings–on is to join the Official West Bloomfield Marching Band facebook page. This page is not open to the public, but band members, staff, and parents are welcome to join. This is where photos from Band Camp activities and our performance on Friday are already posted. .

Our show, “Venezia,” is quite prop-heavy with columns, canals and even a gondola! We are in need of parents to help with loading and unloading props and instruments and from our semi-truck, and getting these essential pieces onto the field before a performance. Crew Chief Brett Crawford is looking for 26 volunteers for each performance. Here is the link to the Pit Crew Sign Up Genius.  If you would like to be are part of the Pit Crew, please login and sign-up:

Bonus: Pit crew members get free admission to the shows, and can view the performance from the track surrounding the field. You can’t get any close to the excitement without an instrument or flag! Questions? Please email Brett Crawford at

There is a great deal of helpful information provided in our handbook, things that will be helpful to know as the season is now underway. Uniform care, spectator etiquette – all covered in the handbook.   Click HERE to download the handbook.
