Happy New Year!   Welcome back; hope your winter break was restful and restorative.   Hearty and overdue congratulations to all performers at December’s All City Winter Festival of Bands. And Congratulations to Patrice Baker, the winner of our $1000 raffle!
There is so much going on this winter!   Concert bands at High School and Middle School levels are preparing for Solo & Ensemble and Band Festivals, Winter Guard had a 12 hour rehearsal Saturday, Winter Drumline is in full swing, the Jazz Orchestra has their first gig coming up at the United We Walk festivities, and Pit Orchestra will be formed soon for the Spring Musical, “Into the Woods.”
Now is when the Band Boosters are really active. Remember our Marching Band Field Day last fall? That was just a warm-up for TWO Guard and Drumline Invitationals this winter.   Already, 61 groups are committed to compete at WBHS on January 31. This requires a huge number of volunteers to execute successfully. And more groups than originally expected will be competing at WBHS on March 14. Also in March will be our Coffee House, featuring a Silent Auction. Quite frankly, the success of these fundraisers will have a direct effect on classroom enrichments and participation fees in the next year. Please join us at the Band Parents Meeting this Tuesday evening, 7pm in the WBHS Media Center for the details and opportunities to help out. The meeting agenda is attached to this email.

Save the Date and Sign Up to Volunteer!

We need everybody to Sign Up to Volunteer!  We are in desperate need for volunteers to work our Saturday, January 31st show. It is just a few weeks away!!

We have been awarded two winter shows: January 31, 2015 and March 14, 2015! Running our band program is expensive so we need fundraisers! Last winter we hosted the largest winter invitational in MCGC history and we earned $10,600 profit! This year’s January show should be just as large! To be able to host such an event, we will need all of our current band parents and many of our faithful alumni parents to volunteer to work this event.  We do have a lot of fun, but we will need everybody’s help!

Please contact Ruth Richards today at richardsbandmom@gmail.com to volunteer.

Having TWO Invitationals this winter provides DOUBLE the exposure for advertisers in our programs! Please see the Business and Personal ad forms found on the Invitationals page on our Web Site. They are easy to sell to businesses (Over 3000 spectators will see their ads!) and Personal Ads are a great way to encourage a Guard or Drumline member. Ads are due by January 27.

Also that evening will be our annual Silent Auction, with great items like a Varsity Jacket, High School Parking Pass, and Laser Tag with Mr. Mielens on auction. And here’s where your help is needed. Your talents (knitting, artwork, gift baskets, etc are needed for auction items. Have you ever wondered what happens to last year’s guard uniforms and flags, or the Winter Drumline tarp from two years ago? We hope to sell them to another school’s guard or drumline. In fact, the “For Sale” page on our web site is one of the most visited pages we have. Now, a volunteer is needed to take over the sales of our used items.  It is time sensitive and requires follow-through and creative problem-solving skills.

The job entails:

  1. Getting a request for a purchase
  2. Finding out to where we are shipping
  3. Going to a shipping place with the items and the destination (we have been using going postal, other options are sought) and getting a cost.
  4. Sending an invoice out
  5. Hope for a reply to the invoice – often the shipping cost puts them off and then they just don’t reply –
  6. Collecting the check or PO if the item sells
  7. Shipping the items.  If the items don’t sell they need to be returned to the band room.

This needs to be someone with time during business hours, creative shipping ideas, and tenacity to secure commitments from buyers. Email president@wbbands for more info.  .
