The School year is rapidly drawing to a close. The High School bands had a great final concert on May 12. The WBHS Jazz Orchestra raised the roof at the Hard Rock Café last Sunday. Abbot 6th, 7th, and 8th graders had their final concert last Thursday. OLMS and Abbott 8th Graders competed at Music in the Park in Sandusky OH Saturday, and came home with a shiny trophy. OLMS bands have their final concert this Wednesday. It’s an amazing time to see how far each band has progressed through the year.
On Monday, the WBHS Marching Band makes its first appearance in 2015 by marching in the Keego Harbor Memorial Day Parade. The WBHS Commencement ceremony takes place next Sunday. And on the Tuesday following, the BBAWB holds its Annual Meeting. Attendance is mandatory for parents of all extracurricular program members and highly encouraged for parents of curricular band members.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: This is (in your editor’s opinion) the absolute best of small-town America. Scouts throwing candy, West Bloomfield Librarians in convertibles with Curious George and Clifford the Big Red Dog, local businesses meeting their community, and the High School band playing Sousa. You really should come and see. Marchers are to be dropped off at Abbott Middle School at 8:30am; the parade begins at Abbott at 10am progresses along Orchard Lake Rd and Cass Lake Rd to the Keego Harbor City Hall for a ceremony honoring those who served. Buses back to Abbott are available.
Marching Band registration is open! If you’re a marching band veteran and figured you’d turn in those forms at rehearsals in July, DON’T!!! If you are in seventh or eighth grade and are thinking about joining Marching Band, listen to the band members who are coming to see your band class in the next week or so. Mr. Mielens is giving final numbers to the show designer on June 12, so you MUST get your registration forms and initial payment in by June 11. CLICK HERE to request a registration packet.
RECRUITING CONTEST: Every registered Marching Band member who recruits a new person to join is entered in a contest. The recruiter who brings in the most new members can win a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones! See the attached flyer for full details and contest rules.
BBAWB Annual Meeting: Tuesday, June 2: 7pm, WBHS Media Center
Mandatory meeting for all parents/guardians of extracurricular ensemble members, highly recommended for curricular band parents/guardians! Plan on joining us for our BBAWB Annual Meeting on June 2. We will be voting on the proposed 2015-2016 budget as well as voting in our BBAWB officers for the coming year. The proposed budget for 2015-2016 is available for review by clicking here. Please take a look – the Band Boosters anticipate income and expenses over $226k nest year, and you should understand where the money comes from and goes to. ATHLETIC PHYSICALS REQUIRED FOR MARCHING BAND
YOU MUST HAVE A CURRNT PHYSICAL (ADMINISTERED AFTER APRIL 1, 2015) BEFORE YOU CAN ATTEND SUMMER REHEARSALS
The Athletic Department offers pre-participation physical examinations (just like a yearly physical from your own doctor) performed by family physicians and orthopedic/sports medicine doctors from the Henry Ford Health System. Exams are available by appointment on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 beginning at 2:30 pm. You may call the high school athletic office at (248)865-6743 to make your appointment. Cost: $20 cash or check payable to Laker Fan Club.

“PRIDE” SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST – Each year, the Marching Band members receive a West Bloomfield Marching Band Pride shirt to wear at the first performance on the new show, on the last night of band camp. Students are encouraged to submit a design for this year’s shirt. See Mr. Mielens for the design specifics. Design entries are due June 11.
Marching Band Mini-Camps
Dates: Thursday, June 11 12-4pm and Friday, June 12 9am – 4pm
Who: All students in grades 8 – 12 (Fall 2015). These rehearsals are required for all current marching band members (Color Guard, Winds and Battery). We would also like to invite those student considering marching band to come join us. Come try it out! Front Ensemble (Pit): Come in and work on exercises/music.
What to Bring: lunch, large water bottle, hat, sunglasses, wear sturdy athletic shoes

BAND EQUIPMENT SALES COORDINATOR NEEDED
Have you ever wondered what happens to last year’s guard uniforms and flags, or the Winter Drumline tarp from two years ago? We hope to sell them to another school’s guard or drumline. In fact, the “For Sale” page on our web site is one of the most visited pages we have. Now, a volunteer is needed to take over the sales of our used items. It is time sensitive and requires follow-through and creative problem-solving skills.
The job entails:
- Getting a request for a purchase
- Finding out to where we are shipping
- Going to a shipping place with the items and the destination (we have been using going postal, other options are sought) and getting a cost.
- Sending an invoice out
- Hope for a reply to the invoice – often the shipping cost puts them off and then they just don’t reply –
- Collecting the check or PO if the item sells
- Shipping the items. If the items don’t sell they need to be returned to the band room.
This needs to be someone with time during business hours, creative shipping ideas, and tenacity to secure commitments from buyers. Email president@wbbands for more info. .
