Dear Marching Band Members and Families,

Thank you for all of your work on Saturday. Despite the weather and other obstacles, I am very proud of the performance you put on at Novi. We will be making several of the commentary tapes from the judges available to the band so we can continue to make progress towards our ultimate goal, of putting on the best show possible.

Thank you to all the parent volunteers! Despite not using all of our props due to the rain/wind, the staff is extremely appreciative that so many of you showed up to rehearse with them on Saturday. We would not be able to make this show run without you!

We have a busy week with Homecoming 2015 this weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing you all and continuing our work!

Go Lakers!

Chad Mielens

WBHS Director of Bands

Students in the concert bands wear specific uniforms for concerts. Young men in 8th – 12th grades wear band-supplied tuxedo jackets. Uniform fittings will be this week, as detailed in a separate email sent earlier by Anne Marie Collier-Miller. A $5 cleaning fee is required from all band members assigned a jacket. Send the money in with your child on their fitting day. Cash is preferred, but checks can be made to BBAWB as well. Additionally, all boys in grades 7-12, and girls in grades 7-8 wear bow ties. If your child needs a bowtie, we also sell them for $5 each. Once you buy it, it is yours forever. If you already have a bowtie, then please use what you have. Parents, if you have had a child age out of the concert band program and wish to donate a bow tie back, we always have concert-day emergencies and could use a few extras on hand.

Please attend the October Band Parents Meeting on September 6 at 7pm at WBHS. Items to be discussed include the Prism concert, Fundraising, State Finals and BOA Grand Nationals schedules. Other topics are pit crew, Band Banquet, and upcoming events. The minutes from the September meeting are attached to this email. Looking forward to seeing you there!

If you would like to be are part of the Pit Crew, please login and sign-up:

Bonus: Pit crew members get free admission to the shows, and can view the performance from the track surrounding the field. You can’t get any close to the excitement without an instrument or flag! Questions? Please email Brett Crawford at

Marching Band uniforms (aside from Guard) should have been taken home after Saturday’s competition. Please make sure the garment bag is opened and the uniform is given the opportunity to dry and air out. They get pretty smelly when left bagged up and damp. Bring uniforms back to school before Friday’s Homecoming activities.

Yankee Candle Fundraiser

The entire band program – middle school, high school, and marching band – will be participating in a fundraiser offering Yankee Candles this fall to assist with instrument repair and purchase. Packets will be distributed soon. Orders can be taken ONLY Oct 23 – Nov 7 (orders must be turned in no later than Nov 7), and products will be delivered 2-4 weeks later, in time for the holidays. Collect money at the time of the order. Checks should be payable to BBAWB.

Also, an online shopping option will allow friends and family anywhere to take advantage of these wonderful products.   Online shopping will be available shortly, and open through the end of the year. Online orders are sent directly to the purchaser, usually in about a week.  It’s a great option!  This was a popular and productive fundraiser last year, we hope for even better responses in 2015. A parent volunteer is needed to assist fundraising coordinator Sarah Boyle. Interested? Any other questions? Email Sarah Boyle.

Parents, here are some basic time guidelines for our trip to BOA Grand Nationals in Indianapolis November 12 – 15. Students will be excused from classes for Thursday and Friday. They will practice in the WB stadium from 9am to noon on Thursday, then load the truck and eat their own lunch from noon to 1pm. The buses and truck will pull out at 1:30pm.

Approximate performance time at Lucas Oil Stadium is on Friday at 12:45pm.

We will find out time of Saturday’s performance sometime Friday night after awards ceremony; but performances are between 7:45am and 4:30p on Saturday.

Returning home, we will be leaving Indianapolis on Saturday around midnight and arriving back at the high school on Sunday, November 15th at approximately 5:30am.

The West Bloomfield Marching Band “Venezia” banquet will be held on Sunday, November 22nd at 6PM at Glen Oaks Country Club. Invitations will be handed out at the Prism Concert.

Now that the band is really active, a great way to stay on top of activities, dates, times and general goings–on is to join the Official West Bloomfield Marching Band facebook page. This page is not open to the public, but band members, staff, and parents are welcome to join. Lots of new photos from the weekend and even videos of the performance can be viewed there.
