Dear Marching Band Members and Families,
I was very proud of our performance at the DaytonOhio bands of America Regional Championship this weekend. The students represented themselves and WBHS very well. It was a wonderful experience to watch so many great bands and perform in a new venue. I am very excited for West Bloomfield to continue to be more active in the Bands of America circuit.
This week is our last regular season home football game. Our football game this week will be on Thursday night instead of Friday. This home game is also senior night. At half-time, all seniors from band, football, cheerleading, and poms will be recognized. Parents/guardians/mentors should plan on accompanying their child on the field during half time for the ceremony.
We will still practice on Thursday, however we will end practice at 5:30 so students may change into uniforms and eat something. Students will not need to be in uniform for the game until 6:30.
Director of Bands
Note from a parent:
I was extremely pleased to be associated with our band this weekend. The students represented us well. They were polite, gracious, helpful, considerate and respectful to their teammates and the chaperones. They waited patiently for food. They were good-natured even early in the morning at the hotel. They were good sports, congratulating other bands on their successes. They shared what they had and even took turns on the playground. 😉 I was pleased to wear my “Pride” shirt because that is exactly how I felt about this team in Dayton. Way to go Lakers!
Christine Long, Vice President of the BBAWB and parent of two in the band

Many people were noticed this week for being exceptional!
In our Alumni division, John Boruta burned the late-night oil getting our trailer polished and painted for its journey to Dayton. That Laker Marching Band with their shiny green truck looks GOOD.
Students who were caught being awesome: Aaron Orel for immediately assessing and quickly recognizing that the Pit needed help loading the truck on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 after band practice, even though he is not in the Pit section. Reese McCaskill Jr. stepped up immediately and offered to sell more raffle tickets. New to the band this year, he is mature, attentive and ambitious. Jason Cheng is helpful to the younger band members especially in his section, and always considerate, generous and kind when dealing with parents. Joe Boyle offered to lift and carry heavy things and he spent extra time helping to pack and unload the trailer this weekend.
Parents: All our chaperones on this trip, and especially Ruth Richards and Marguerite DeBello who coordinated getting everybody fed.
You are all Super Lakers!
Our fall Tag Day has been scheduled for October 3rd-October 5th. We understand that some families will be observing the holy days that weekend. We hope that the rest of the students will sign up for a shift. This event is critical to meet our budget needs. It will be on Friday, October 3rd from 5pm to 7pm; Saturday, October 4th from 9am to 7pm; and Sunday, October 5th from 10am to 5pm. We have two locations: Plum Market on Orchard Lake Road and Maple; and Busch Market at 14 Mile and Farmington Roads in West Bloomfield. Tag Day is when groups of 3 students play their instruments and solicit donations at local grocery stores. It is an important fundraiser for us. It also helps connect us to our community by sharing our music with the public and raising awareness of our wonderful band program. We must have one parent/adult for each shift. Please CLICK HERE to go to Sign Up Genius to sign up for a shift. If you have any questions, please contact Ruth Richards at email@example.com
Major Fundraiser – Raffle
The West Bloomfield Bands raffle has begun! This is a huge fundraiser that will benefit all of the WestBloomfieldSchool District bands. Tickets went home with the Marching Band members last week. The concert and symphony band members at WBHS, Abbott and OLMS will be receiving theirs in the next couple of weeks. Each student is responsible for selling at least five $5 tickets. The prize is $1,000! (If fewer than 400 tickets are sold, the prize reverts to a 50/50). The drawing will take place on Dec. 11, 2014 at the WBHS Winter Concert in the auditorium. Participants need not be present to win. When you have finished selling your tickets, please return the stubs (the part of the ticket with the purchaser’s name and phone number) and the money (checks can be made to BBAWB) to the Band Director’s Mailbox. Please do not throw out or destroy any raffle tickets. They are all numbered and assigned to each student and we need to account for every ticket. If you need more tickets, please contact Christine Long at firstname.lastname@example.org or leave a note in the Vice President’s mail slot in the Band Boosters’ office in the band room at the high school.
CONCERT BAND NEWS

WBHS girls will provide their own concert dress: all black, long sleeved shirts and slacks or dress-code-appropriate skirts with tights. All males will need to provide their own black dress trousers this year. Bow ties are available for $5. OLMS students will be fitted Tuesday, Sept 30. Abbott and WBHS uniform fittings have been postponed to October 6th.

Oct 23 – OLMS bands concert – 7pm
Marching Band Uniforms
Several people borrowed marching band uniform pieces before the Homecoming and Dayton performances. Please return those to the Band Booster’s office (aka, the music library). Label them so Mrs. Long can keep track of what has been returned. This also serves as a reminder to the Marching Band to please take a moment on Tuesday to make sure all of your uniform pieces made it back to West Bloomfield in your garment bag. After sitting in the hot trailer for a couple of days, they will probably be wrinkled (especially if your hanger was broken as many people’s were.) Spend 5 minutes after school on Tuesday folding your bibs and hanging up your jacket properly. If you uniform needs washing, please leave enough time to wash and air dry before Thursday’s game. If you need a new hanger, there are several metal and wooden ones in the bottom of the girls’ uniform closet in the orchestra room. If you are missing Dinkles, there are some used/lost ones on the shelves in the band room. If your gloves are threadbare, please take them home and stitch them up. You may need fresh black socks. Bring a new pair before you take the old ones home. Let Mrs. Long know if you are missing a mirror or have any issues with your Shako sooner (Tuesday) rather than later (Thursday afternoon).
A Big Shout Out to the Pit Crew for the Dayton Show. Awesome Job everyone!!! Without your help, the show would not go on. Thank you, Scott Floer, Dominique Ratinaud, Marci Grossman, Evan Grossman Lempert, Mark Lempert, Geoff Semrau, Cathy Gimby, Suzanne Crawford, Kevin Long, Christine Long, Barbara Brenner, Steve Bologna and Matt Orel. If I missed anyone, please let me know so I can recognize you.
~ Brett Crawford
