Dear Marching Band Members and Families,

It was another busy week for the Lakers. Thank you to everyone who performed for the teachers on Wednesday! We received many compliments, and multiple shout outs during the teacher seminars!

We are excited to start the next part of our season! While there is still much to learn, the band is thrilled to finally begin our performance schedule. This Friday we will perform at our first home game of the season, and on Saturday, we perform at WBHS Field Day! Please come out and support your student at these performances, and if you haven’t yet, sign up for a work assignment for Field Day.

It is important now that school has started that I remind everyone of the importance of your child attending every rehearsal. While I understand that circumstances arise, it is crucial for the development of the band and show that we have 100% attendance at each rehearsal. As always, please communicate with me regarding absences. My email is if you have any questions or concerns.

I cannot wait for the 2015 WB Band to show off our program in the following weeks. As always, Go Lakers!

Chad Mielens

WBHS Director of Bands

Laker of the week is Gavin Stanfel!

Being brand-new to the activity is always a challenge, but overcoming adversity and having a strong work ethic and positive attitude goes a long way. Gavin has demonstrated a remarkable skill set and persevered through a great deal of improvement since the beginning of the season. The staff is very proud of how far he has come, and are excited to watch him continue to grow.

Super Laker Parents – Mrs. Crawford was there at the end of each practice this past week, with a cooler full of ice pops.  Mrs. Satam brought creamsicles, too. So kind of them to think of our hot musicians. Generous, too!

Last week each band member received 20 fliers to take around their neighborhoods and attach to flags on neighbor’s mailboxes. Hope you kept track of where you left your fliers. On Tuesday, September 8, after band practice you have to go back around to all of the houses that you left fliers and pick up any cans/bottles left for you. We will send out a Thank You note for you to leave for anyone that donated. Next, take the cans/bottles back to your local grocery store. All refund slips must be turned in to Ms. Boyle or left in the Band Boosters mailbox in the band room by Friday, September 11. The band is divided up by section (Percussion vs. Guard vs. Brass vs. Woodwinds), and the section with the highest dollar return amount will get a SPECIAL PRIZE.

There are still some openings for Field Day workers on Saturday, September 12. Please contact volunteer coordinator Ruth Richards! Your help is needed! Parents or students who can volunteer should email Ruth Richards.

The Band Boosters will publish a program for Field Day. All band members and families are invited to sell ads in the program.  50% of the proceeds from ads sold are banked in the student’s Points account. Many parents take this opportunity to celebrate (and/or mildly embarrass) their band kids with photo ads.  Section Leaders receive a complimentary quarter page ad to honor their section.

Ads need to be turned in Tuesday, Sept 8. Business Ad forms are available HERE, Personal Ad forms are HERE on the Band web site.

Save the date:

Our Fall Tag Day Saturday September 26th and Sunday September 27th. Further details to be announced soon.

While you’re out getting any last-minute school shopping done, pick up several pairs of black socks (length – above the ankle). Black socks are a MANDATORY REQUIREMENT every time the band is in uniform. Keep extras on hand!

Now that the band is really active, a great way to stay on top of activities, dates, times and general goings–on is to join the Official West Bloomfield Marching Band facebook page. This page is not open to the public, but band members, staff, and parents are welcome to join. This is where photos from Band Camp activities and our performance on Friday are already posted. .

Our show, “Venezia,” is quite prop-heavy with columns, canals and even a gondola! We are in need of parents to help with loading and unloading props and instruments and from our semi-truck, and getting these essential pieces onto the field before a performance. Crew Chief Brett Crawford is looking for 26 volunteers for each performance. Here is the link to the Pit Crew Sign Up Genius.  If you would like to be are part of the Pit Crew, please login and sign-up:

Bonus: Pit crew members get free admission to the shows, and can view the performance from the track surrounding the field. You can’t get any close to the excitement without an instrument or flag! Questions? Please email Brett Crawford at

There is a great deal of helpful information provided in our handbook, things that will be helpful to know as the season is now underway. Uniform care, spectator etiquette – all covered in the handbook.   Click HERE to download the handbook.
